Year 5 – Mr Jones

This term our topic is ‘health, fitness and the environment’. This is a technology and science based topic and we are going to have many fun and interesting experiences.

English – This term we will be looking at film and graphic stories linking to our topic where the children will work towards the creation of their own film trailer. We will be learning to create dramatic effect in writing and consider the audience.

We will be looking at a range of authors, studying both contemporary and older literature. We will spend time looking at choral and performance poetry where the children will create and perform their own poems. In narrative text we will be concentrating on the use of dialogue and appropriate punctuation. There will also be time spent on persuasive writing starting with letters, the children will distinguish between facts and opinions and make use of persuasive phrases through writing. Finally children put together presentations and write letters on topical issues.

Pupils will continue to work on handwriting and spelling. They will also bring home reading books on a regular basis to read with an adult at home. Please refer to red reading records for further information.

How you can help: Encourage your child to learn their weekly spellings and to read a wide range of material.

Mathematics- Our work will continue to focus on the four rules, fractions, decimals, place value and the properties of number. There will be emphasis this term on being able to transfer their number skills within a range of problem solving activities. Time will be spent on consolidating multiplication and division skills in order to promote confidence and enjoyment. We will also be working on time, interpreting the 24 hour clock and also estimating and calculating time. Pupils will also be working on capacity, increasing their understanding and appreciation of standard units of capacity. Towards the end of the term there will be lessons on measurement of angle and use of a protractor.

How you can help: Involve your child in day-to-day mathematical problems such as adding up a shopping bill, simple budgeting etc. This will really help their mental ability.

Science –The first half of the term we will be studying flowering plants and plant reproduction, seed dispersal and pollination. This is a great time of year for being outside and looking at plants, studying their anatomy and what they need to flourish. During the second half of the term we will be looking at ourselves, how our bodies work, concentrating on certain organs such as the heart.

How you can help:  Encourage your child to help in the garden – planting seeds and looking after plants. It’s good fun but will also help understanding of our topic.

History/Geography – We will be learning about our COMENIUS partner countries, developing our knowledge and understanding of cultural differences. We will study geographical aspects of Spain, Italy, Sweden and the Czech Republic. Also, we will be looking at coastal areas and comparing landscapes. We will be looking at coastal erosion, cliffs, caves and the human impact on the coastline.

Art – Children will explore how to convey movement in their work. They explore dynamic activities such as sport, dance, drama and music as a starting point for making work in two dimensions. They look at how the idea of movement is shown in different kinds of art, such as photography, illustrations, cartoons, paintings, prints, and experiment with different methods and techniques to show movement.

RE – We will be listening to stories from different faiths – stories which have a message. These will include the story of Diwali (Hindu) and ‘Nasrudin and the Glutton’ (Muslim). We will then move on to special stories from the Bible – parables. We will assess how we can learn from the parables that Jesus told and how they are relevant to our lives today. Part of our studies in RE will centre around pilgrimage and we will research the different places that are visited by people on these special journeys.

PE – Hopefully, we will be outside for many of our lessons this term – weather permitting! Therefore it’s a good idea to have trainers for both Wednesday and Friday sessions. We will be continuing to develop our skills in hockey as well as rugby, cricket and tennis. Our skills and technique in these areas will be worked upon in detail.
