Curriculum News - Year Six - Summer Term - Mrs. Decker

This is a very important and busy term for Year 6. During the first half term pupils will undergo their end of year assessments. In the second half term the class will embark on several projects and trips, these have been outlined below in the ‘dates for your diary’ section.

How can you help? – This is an extremely busy term. In order to maximise their potential and ensure they have the best possible final term at St Brides, pupils will need to make sure that they come to school on a regular basis and that they go to bed at a sensible time. Your help with these matters is much appreciated.

LiteracyDuring the first half term the class will undertake a program of work entitled ‘Gulliver’. This work is a scheme that will continually assess the pupils’ attainment in Literacy and will cover all aspects of the subject including fiction, non-fiction, writing, reading and oracy. After half term the pupils literacy will be taught on a cross curricular basis through their foundation curriculum.

Maths - The class will continue to work on the four main areas of mathematics; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as looking at shape and measurement. During the first half term pupils will also undertake assessed pieces of maths work.

Science - This term, the pupils Science lessons will focus on ‘forces’. They will be looking at the various types of forces and the way in which they impact on our day to day lives. Pupils will also be using their scientific skills by planning and undertaking their own scientific investigations; these will form part of their assessments.

GeographyThis term we will concentrate on using maps and other geographic skills relating to our history topic.

HistoryDuring the latter part of the term the class will study the Romans and the Celts. They will look at the way these civilizations lived, comparing and contrasting between the two.

RE- Our topic of study will be ‘Places of Worship’. The class will be studying the places of worship of various religions. They will also be studying the journeys of St Paul, and some of his letters.

ICTThe class will continue to develop their ICT skills through all subjects, they will also learn specific skills with regard to preparing computer based presentations.

Art  - During the latter half of the term, we will be looking at patterns and artwork based on our history topic

Music - The class will be learning and practicing the songs which will be part of their Leavers service.

PEThis term we will be focusing on the summer sports of Athletics and Striking & Fielding games including Cricket, Rounders and Baseball. We will also take part in some outdoor adventure activities which are aimed at increasing the pupils’ skills of co-operation and team work.  Although PE will continue to be taught on Tuesday and Friday it is recommended that pupils have their PE kits with them everyday this term, as where possible I like to take advantage of the good weather!

The class will also continue to receive French lessons every Monday.
