Year 4 Summer Term
Miss Potts
Special Places
Mathematics
The class will continue to work through the four main operations. They will be developing their understanding of place value, ordering and rounding. They will also be developing mental calculations for addition and subtraction, and rapid recall of multiplication and division facts. Understanding of time will be developed by learning how to use timetables and measure area, perimeter and angles.
English
The children will investigate persuasive writing and link this to science by designing advertising for healthy eating and exercise. They will also use a range of books to identify issues and predict how characters will deal with them. Using informal letters and hot seating they will consider different viewpoints. Proverbs will be used to stimulate creation of some short plays based on everyday life. Then we will look closely at play script features and stage directions to develop characters and setting. Literacy skills will also be developed by producing explanation leaflets and guides relating to our topic.
Comenius Project
Children will develop IT skills by producing a power point presentation to explain how we raised money during Lent Charities. Children will continue with the ecological study started last term so we will be completing information leaflets about endangered indigenous wildlife and studying other plants and creatures that live in our school grounds.
PE
‘Sportstars’ will continue to teach games every Friday. We will also be preparing for sports day by practising athletic skills.
Topic subjects
Our topic this term is a RE skills based comparative study on ‘Special Places’. Children will learn about the important world faiths by comparing their buildings and artefacts and replanting the faith gardens outside our classroom. We will visit St Bridget’s church, Llandaff Cathedral and hopefully a synagogue. We will then consider the life of Moses and his role as a leader.
During DT lessons we will research, plan, design and make shelters that would be most beneficial in school grounds.
Art lessons will develop children’s understanding of pattern, shape and line by looking for geometric shapes in the environment. Use of these patterns will help us understand Islamic art. Children will use the skills taught to design a stained glass window to explain their understanding what we have learned about the different world faiths.
Some local history will be taught when we visit our church and geography skills will be developed by learning about the wildlife in our school grounds.
Science will continue to develop children’s understanding of what they need to eat and exercise to stay healthy. Children will also investigate the different habitats and food chains of animals in the school grounds.
We will also be visiting Techniquest in June to put some of our scientific skills into practise!
Homework- Could all homework books please be returned every Thursday. Homework will be set on Fridays to be completed for the following week.
Home reading books can be returned according to the children’s allocated book changing day.
Please ensure that your child brings in their PE kit on Thursday and Friday, they should be suitable for outdoor games, whatever our weather!
