An eyewitness account of storey Arms written by Laura Smith
Day 1
Afternoon Activity
We get up. As soon as we arrive off the coach we have lunch and then are sent up into the mountains! The snow is six inches deep and it’s probably below freezing. We went for a hike of about 3 miles while is was snowing. We then crossed the bridge into the forest where we went back to Storey Arms.
Evening Activity
You’d think that would be enough for one day but, no. At about 8 o’clock, it was pitch black. We brought torches and we were sent out into the ropes wound round the forest and we had to follow them trustfully through bogs and rivers and waterfalls. Once we lost the rope and had to be rescued by each other.
Day 2
Morning/Afternoon Activity
On day two we were taken gorge walking. We climbed about on the river and squelched then through the bogs. The funniest thing was; we had to crawl in gloopy mud under logs set in the ground. We came out so coated in mud. Then we stood under a waterfall to wash it all off. It was freezing! Then we did some waterfall climbing, then we had lunch and went back.
Evening Activity
For our evening activity at about 8 o’clock, we were set on an ancient drovers route. In daylight, good weather and no interruptions it takes 40 minutes. This night, it was raining and we were being asked questions on our ‘walkie talkie’. It took us about 80 minutes. The teacher’s walkie talkies broke down so we only got one question.
Day 3
Morning/Afternoon Activity
The final activity was caving. We climbed down into the cave – system off a cliff. To properly enter the caves we had to wriggle through a hole called the wormhole. It gets quite claustrophobic but it’s fun when you get going. We all did the letter-box. This is a tiny space were you are posted through by the person behind you. In some places of the cave the ceiling was so low you were on your belly and your helmet was scraping the roof.
My eyewitness account end here and I hope you will sometime come and visit.
